Alexis Henri Charles de Clérel, comte de Tocqueville was a French political scientist, historian, and writer, best known for his work Democracy in America (1835–1840). In this book, Tocqueville analyzes the political system and society in the United States, highlighting the strengths of democracy, but also the risks, such as the tyranny of the majority and the tendency towards excessive individualism. He was a keen observer of the transition from aristocratic to democratic societies and had a significant influence on modern political thought. He also wrote The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856), in which he examines the causes of the French Revolution.
