Albrecht Dürer was a German painter, printmaker and art theorist, one of the leading figures in the history of universal art. His work, imbued with the ideas of the Renaissance, Humanism and the Reformation, exerted a particular influence especially on later German and Dutch artists. With those like 350 wood engravings and 100 copper engravings decisively contributed to the development of engraving as an independent art form.

A versatile personality of the era, he dealt not only with the graphic arts, but also with mathematics, mechanics and literature.

He was formed under the influence of humanists from his hometown, but also from the Netherlands and Italy, where he undertook various trips.

His works reflect the forward trend of German society, the class struggle during the Reformation and the German Peasants' War.

He was born in Nurnberg, Germany on May 21, 1471.
He died in Nurnberg, Germany on April 6, 1528.
