He was one of the most important Italian writers of the 20th century, known as a novelist, poet, essayist, editor and intellectual of international stature.

His work explores themes such as memory, identity and the relationship between the individual and history, often set against the backdrop of Italian society in the interwar period and during World War II. Among his best-known works is the novel The Garden of the Finzi-Contini Family (Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini), which was also adapted into an award-winning film.

In addition to his literary work, Bassani also had an active role as an editor and cultural promoter, being involved in the discovery and support of young Italian authors. His legacy remains essential for modern European literature.
