Philippe Desportes (1546–1606) was a major French poet of the Renaissance, renowned for his refined lyricism and Italian influences in his work. Raised in the spirit of humanism, Desportes traveled to Italy, where he discovered Petrarch, whose poetry profoundly marked his style. He wrote sonnets, odes, and elegies about love, beauty, and transience. He was official poet at the court of King Henry III and a protégé of the Cardinal of Lorraine. His harmonious language, full of metaphors and musical rhythms, influenced classical French literature, preparing the ground for authors such as Malherbe. Desportes remains an emblematic figure of 16th-century French poetry, celebrated for his talent for translating feelings into memorable poetic images.
